Benefits of yoga during pregnancy

Our lives have flown by, we have done what we loved, studied, socialized, acquired many habits and then got pregnant. Now this big change is settling into a body that is conditioned in a certain way, habits of mind and character traits. A new little life is growing inside us, which without asking who we are and what we want, does its own thing. Suddenly everything is subordinated to it and our previously acquired behaviors come to the fore even more. If we have been exercising regularly and “dealing with ourselves” until now, we will simply continue. If we have not, it will seem much harder to start now.

Yoga for pregnant women is intended for everyone, regardless of previous experience, because it does not matter how we have been until now, the second state is an opportunity to start from scratch, in fact it is a new beginning because the body is in a way “reset”. Now we can take time for exercise, health, directing attention to ourselves and our baby, relaxation and preparation for childbirth.

Yoga during pregnancy brings many benefits that doctors often recommend.
First of all, the practice is light and slow, so we can’t get hurt. Movements and positions are performed consciously and with full attention, we always listen to how we feel and do what is good for us.
On the other hand, while holding the position, we develop strength and keep the kinetic chain of muscles connected. Strength is not the ability to isolate one strong muscle, but to connect muscles well and transfer weight throughout the entire body. When a small baby arrives, we will need a lot of strength to be able to hold, carry and rock it.

The flexibility that practicing yoga brings us helps the entire body and mind become more adaptable. For example, a fragile branch will break under a strong gust of wind, while a flexible one will only bend and return to the same place. The same is true for us. Stiffness is the inability to adapt with the body and mind. We also associate the concept of stretching with a feeling of freedom, openness and lightness. Tensions, cramps, pressure and contractions that occur in the body affect our emotional state and capacity to “be there for the other”, which we definitely need to strengthen considering that a small being is coming who will need us 24 hours a day.

Last and most important. Breathing! The magical power of yoga is in the breath, and so in pregnancy yoga, we breathe slowly, calmly, purposefully and deeply. We breathe through all the organs, deep into the lower back, we breathe to the baby, in all, where we stretch we just breathe consciously. So that we can regulate some part of the body or our condition with our breath. When the great effort of childbirth comes, we have this valuable internal tool that we can use to help ourselves.

Every pregnant woman is special and every pregnancy is different, so it is important to develop immediate awareness of the body and to prepare for childbirth and motherhood. Regular yoga during pregnancy will give us an excellent ratio of flexibility, strength and rest that we need.
