Grass-hop-pers

Living in nature means living with insects.

We share our days with many forms of life — in Buddhist terms, the visible and the invisible. First you learn not to mind them. Then you begin to notice them. Before long you are studying them because, frankly, they are fascinating.
Many insects genuinely look as if they came from another planet, like aliens. But our planet is in space and all of us are technically aliens, so I go the whole way around that thought and land right back in wonder at nature…

Grasshoppers are among the creatures that cause us no bother. They do not bite or attack, and they even let us come close enough for a detailed look. The textures of their armour are flawlessly made: dots, little strokes, full-on spacesuits…

They appear in every shape, colour, size, age, youth, state of liveliness, and state of not-so-liveliness… We watch how they move and what they get up to: standing, jumping, flying, running, hiding, hanging out. Every morning they politely say “Good day,” and every evening they call “Good night.” Of course they belong here in the Biševo Journal.
