If the Blue Cave is Biševo’s Eiffel Tower, then Libri are its Notre-Dame — in other words, the second landmark you really need to know. Libri are a unique geological phenomenon that clearly displays layers of sediment from different rocks. Their name comes from the Italian word libri meaning books, because the stacked layers look like volumes packed tightly on a shelf. And Libri are a book in another sense: they describe the passage of time and make visible the power with which nature moves everything.

You can see Libri — or Libre, if that is how one is meant to decline the name — while travelling by boat along the island’s north-west side, from Komiža toward Porat Bay. That whole stretch is filled with imposing views and dominant cliffs rising over the blue sea. Gull nests, plants settled on impossible rock faces, and the hard edge of the reefs convey the solitude, distance, and wildness of the sea roaming around this little offshore island.

When your path brings you here and you are passing around the island by boat, keep your eyes on the cliffs. Suddenly, just around the corner, the magnificent Libri.
